🇪🇺 European Union
| Grade | Grain Size | NaCl Min | Moisture Max | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1 · Grade A — 0/2 mm Fine | 0.2 – 2.0 mm | ≥ 97% | ≤ 1.0% | Footpath, sidewalk, pre-wetting brine. Type 1 = kiln-dried with anti-caking option. Fast-dissolving fraction for pedestrian zones and brine plants. |
| Type 1 · Grade A — 0/4 mm Common | 0.2 – 4.0 mm | ≥ 94% (min) / 97%+ (premium) | ≤ 1.0% | Most-specified EU motorway grade. Standard winter-maintenance tender size — Schmidt / Epoke / Nido spreaders. |
| Type 1 · Grade A — 0/6.3 mm Medium | 0.2 – 6.3 mm | ≥ 94% (min) / 97%+ (premium) | ≤ 1.0% | Medium-fine spreading grade for primary roads. Type 1 processed. |
| Type 1 · Grade B — 2/8 mm | 2 – 8 mm | ≥ 94% (min) / 97%+ (premium) | ≤ 1.5% | Coarser Type 1 grade. Severe conditions, urban roads, pre-treatment stockpiles, high-speed motorways. |
| Type 1 · Grade C — Lump | 10 – 40 mm | ≥ 94% | ≤ 1.5% | Lump salt. Stockpiled, crushed at depot before use. Cheapest Type 1 stockpile option. |
| Type 2 · Sea Salt 0/6.3 mm — Natural | 0.2 – 6.3 mm | ≥ 95% | ≤ 3.0% | 🆕 Solar-evaporated sea salt at natural moisture — no kiln drying. Significant FOB cost savings vs Type 1. Common in southern-EU bulk tenders (Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal, France Mediterranean). Mediterranean / Black Sea routes. |
| Type 2 · Sea Salt 2/8 mm — Natural | 2 – 8 mm | ≥ 95% | ≤ 3.5% | 🆕 Coarser natural-moisture sea-salt fraction. Stockpile fill / mechanical spreader use. Requires covered depot storage. |
| Type 2 · Sea Salt Bulk — High Moisture | 0.5 – 10 mm | ≥ 94% | ≤ 4.0% | 🆕 Lowest-cost EU sea-salt deicing option. Reblended with drier salt at depot before spreading. Direct vessel discharge. |

Moisture Levels for Road Salt
Rock salt moisture content varies by processing method and determines handling properties, storage requirements, and cost. All six levels available from our Egyptian production.
Kiln-Dried (< 0.10%)
HighestBest flowability; prevents bridge formation in hoppers and spreader boxes.
Screened (≤ 0.50%)
HighSolar or kiln assisted. Consistent flow. Good for automated spreading systems.
Processed (≤ 1.0%)
StandardMost common traded road salt specification. Good balance of price and handling.
Mined (≤ 1.5%)
CompetitiveNatural mine moisture after screening. Slight caking risk — requires covered storage.
Natural Sea Salt (≤ 3.0%)
LowSolar-evaporated sea salt at natural moisture. Significant FOB cost savings vs kiln-dried. Common spec in southern EU tenders. Requires covered depot storage; not for pre-wetted spreaders.
Natural Sea Salt (≤ 4.0%)
LowerHigher-moisture sea salt — cheapest sea-salt deicing option. Used for primary stockpile fill; reblended with drier salt at depot. Mechanical spreaders only.
Lump / Run-of-Mine (≤ 5%)
LowestRun-of-mine lump or unwashed bulk. Requires covered storage + crushing at depot.
Loading Ports by Salt Source
We FOB from 4 ports per source type, chosen per tender by destination market and vessel size. Sea salt loads at our North Sinai + Mediterranean delta + Red Sea ports; rock salt at Mediterranean + Red Sea ports closest to the Siwa / Qattara mines.
Sea Salt — North Sinai + Red Sea
Solar pans at El-Arish / Bardawil (North Sinai) + Red Sea coastal salt fields
Closest port to El-Arish / Bardawil pans. Mediterranean coast east of Port Said.
SCCT container terminal at Suez Canal eastern entrance. Container + bulk vessel.
Deep-water bulk vessel port. Primary salt-export gateway for Mediterranean delta region.
Red Sea coast — best for Gulf, East Africa, South Asia, Far East destinations.
Rock Salt — Siwa + Qattara
Mined at Siwa Oasis + Qattara Depression (Western Desert)
Deep-water bulk port west of Alexandria. Primary loading point for Siwa-mined rock salt.
Main port — bulk vessel + container. Alternative to El Dekheila for smaller vessels.
Used for shipments routed via the eastern delta (e.g. Qattara → Cairo → Damietta).
Red Sea route for rock salt destined to Gulf / Asia / East Africa.
Anti-Caking Declaration
EN 16811-1 distinguishes Type 1 (with anti-caking agent E535) from Type 2 (without). Some markets ban anti-caking, others require it. Tell us your tender spec — we supply both.
Type 1 — With Anti-Caking
Standard kiln-dried road salt — prevents bridging in spreader hoppers and silos. Most state DOTs in the US, UK Highways, Scandinavian winter agencies.
Pre-wetting brine systems (anti-caking lowers brine performance), food-contact destinations, environmental no-additive zones (Germany Bundesländer, Switzerland cantons).
Default for all kiln-dried Grade A/B/C variants.
Type 2 — No Anti-Caking
Pre-wetting brine systems (MgCl₂ / CaCl₂ / NaCl liquids), countries that ban anti-caking (DE, CH, AT, parts of FR), buyers blending with their own additives at depot.
Long-term dry storage in spreader hoppers (will bridge in damp conditions). Best with low-moisture handling chain.
EU Type 2 natural-moisture rows + all Pre-Wetted (PW) variants.
Pre-Wetted (Brine-Treated)
Modern Nordic + EU winter maintenance. Immediate melting action — 20–30% usage reduction vs dry spreading. Preferred by Trafikverket (SE), Statens vegvesen (NO), French SANEF.
Bulk stockpile storage (brine drips). Best for direct-to-spreader logistics with covered transport.
PS-ROCK-DEIC-PW + PS-SEA-DEIC-PW.

Pre-Wetted Salt
Pre-wetted salt is dry rock salt coated with liquid brine (typically MgCl₂ at 20–30 g/L, or NaCl saturated brine) before loading. The liquid coating acts immediately on contact with ice, while the salt granules provide lasting effect.
