What is the difference between sea salt and rock salt?
Sea salt is produced by evaporating seawater in solar ponds; rock salt (halite) is mined from underground deposits left by ancient seas. Both are sodium chloride (NaCl) and both are food-safe when graded, but they differ in four practical ways: purity (washed sea salt reaches 99%+ NaCl vs 97–99% for rock salt), trace minerals (sea salt carries a controllable marine mineral profile; rock salt reflects its geological source), grain and colour (sea salt is typically whiter and finer; rock salt is off-white/light-grey and denser), and cost (rock salt is usually cheaper to produce). Which is "better" depends entirely on the application, not on one being superior.
Is rock salt the same as sea salt?
No. They are both sodium chloride but come from different sources and are not interchangeable for every use. Rock salt is mined halite; sea salt is evaporated from seawater. Rock salt is denser and lower in moisture (better for road de-icing and freight economics), while washed sea salt reaches higher purity with a tighter sulphate and iron profile (preferred for chlor-alkali membrane cells, pharma and premium food). For most industrial procurement the correct question is not "which is better" but "which spec does my process require".
For a chlor-alkali plant, should I order sea salt or rock salt?
Sea salt — specifically washed/double-washed Mediterranean sea salt graded to ≤ 0.08% SO₄ for membrane-cell electrolysis. The EU chlor-alkali industry standard is washed sea salt; iron and heavy-metal profile is more controllable. Diaphragm-cell plants tolerate higher SO₄ and can use rock salt, but most modern plants are membrane-cell.
For 10,000 MT of road deicing salt, sea or rock?
Rock salt for almost all cases. Higher bulk density (1.10–1.35 t/m³ vs 0.95–1.10) means better truck and container utilization, lower freight cost per delivered MT. Lower natural moisture (1.0–1.5% vs 3–4%) avoids free-water issues in spreader hoppers. The exception is Type 2 EN 16811-1 markets (some southern EU regions) that specifically tender for natural-moisture sea salt as a cheaper alternative — Egypt offers both.
Why is sea salt typically more expensive than rock salt?
Production economics. Sea salt requires solar evaporation ponds, harvesting, washing, drying — labour and capex intensive. Rock salt is mined directly with mechanical extraction. Once you add washing or kiln-drying to either, the cost gap narrows. For premium chlor-alkali or pharma grades the difference disappears entirely. For a binding quote on your specific grade and destination, use the RFQ form.
Can I use rock salt in food processing?
Yes — Egyptian rock salt food-grade meets EU + USDA spec when explicitly graded. The ≥97% NaCl floor + per-batch CoA make it suitable for industrial food processing, curing, brining. The visual difference is colour: rock salt has a natural off-white/light-grey appearance vs sea salt's controllable white. For retail / table salt, washed sea salt is typically preferred for the cleaner colour.
Which has more iodine — sea salt or rock salt?
Neither has meaningful iodine naturally. Iodized salt (table salt / livestock licks) has potassium iodate or iodide added during processing — typically 40–80 ppm for human nutrition, 40 ppm for livestock licks. The base salt can be either sea or rock; iodization is a downstream step.
