Pharmaceutical-grade sodium chloride (NaCl) must meet the purity and safety requirements of one or more national pharmacopoeia standards. Here are the key differences:

United States Pharmacopeia (USP)

USP NaCl requires: NaCl ≥ 99.0% (on dried basis), Bromide ≤ 0.01%, Barium test passes, Iron ≤ 2 ppm, Phosphate ≤ 0.001%, Calcium and Magnesium ≤ 0.01%, Heavy metals ≤ 10 ppm, and Sulfate ≤ 0.015%.

British Pharmacopoeia (BP)

BP NaCl requirements are similar to USP but use different test methods. Key additions: Aluminium ≤ 0.2 ppm (for dialysis solutions), Nitrate ≤ 0.0002%, Fluoride ≤ 1 ppm.

European Pharmacopoeia (Ph.Eur)

Ph.Eur 7.0 NaCl is broadly equivalent to BP, with identical core purity requirements. Ph.Eur is the reference for most EU member states.
