European Union: EN 16811-1:2016

This is the current EU standard for salt for de-icing of roads. It replaces older national standards in most EU member states.

Key requirements: - Grade A: 0.2–6.3 mm, NaCl ≥ 94%, Moisture ≤ 1.0% - Grade B: 2–8 mm, NaCl ≥ 94%, Moisture ≤ 1.5% - Grade C: 10–40 mm (lump), NaCl ≥ 94%, Moisture ≤ 5.0% - Premium grades: NaCl ≥ 97% are increasingly specified by premium tenders

Manufacturers must issue a Declaration of Performance (DoP) and CE mark the product. Test reports from accredited labs are required.

United States & Canada: ASTM D632-12

ASTM D632 is the American standard for sodium chloride road deicing salt.

Key requirements: - Grade 1 (Coarse): 95%+ on 4.75mm sieve, NaCl ≥ 95% - Grade 2 (Fine): NaCl ≥ 97%, fine distribution

Most US state DOTs reference ASTM D632 in their bid specifications. Canadian provinces use CGSB-12.1-M79, which is similar.

United Kingdom: BS 3247:1996

BS 3247 governs highway de-icing salt in the UK. Post-Brexit, this remains the UK standard independently of EN 16811-1.

Key requirements: 1–6mm grain size, NaCl ≥ 94% (standard) or ≥ 97% (premium), Insoluble residue < 1%, Moisture ≤ 1.5%.

Highways England supplier approval may be required for trunk road supply contracts.
